Behind the Boardroom with Aideen O’Neill
Supporting young people and shaping strategy

What’s it like being on the MACS Board?
We caught up with Aideen O’Neill, Principal Consultant and Organisational Development Lead at AAB Recruitment, to find out.
Aideen joined the MACS Board in 2023. With a background in the private sector, she brings a wealth of experience, but says the role has offered just as much in return.
Here’s what she shared about the impact it’s had on her personally and professionally, and why she believes more people should consider joining a charity board.
When I first joined the Board of MACS in 2023 I didn’t fully grasp just how much the experience would impact me, personally and professionally.
MACS works with young people in incredibly challenging circumstances, offering housing support, mental health care, and providing a safe environment for young people. Being part of this mission has opened my eyes to the complex societal issues facing so many young people, and to the power of compassion, resilience, and the right kind of support at the right time.
It’s also given me something I didn’t expect: time outside my corporate bubble. In my day job in the private sector, I’m often removed from the day-to-day realities that charities like MACS face.
This role has helped broaden my perspective. It’s reminded me, again and again, of how vital organisations like MACS are and how hard their teams work every single day to meet rising demand with limited resources.
Working alongside the MACS leadership team and my fellow board members has been a privilege. I’m constantly inspired by their passion, dedication, and integrity. It’s been rewarding to use the skills and experience I’ve gained in my career to support an organisation doing such critical, life-changing work.
MACS has also led me to consider how we support the most vulnerable in society. Â And whilst that can feel overwhelming at times, it is also encouraging to see the brilliant, caring people doing real, hands-on work to change lives.
I’ve learned so much from the MACS community, young people, staff, and fellow board members alike. Witnessing the progress MACS has made over the years fills me with pride. My own contribution may be small, but it makes me determined to keep showing up, supporting the senior team, and using my voice where I can.
Charities like MACS need strong, active boards. Our role is to provide good governance, strategic leadership, and a diversity of thought, skills, and experience. It’s about being there to support, to challenge, and to make sure the organisation is set up to achieve its long-term goals, even when the financial landscape is unpredictable, as it so often is.
If you’re considering joining a charity board, my advice is simple: do it! Yes, there’s a time commitment. Yes, it’s a serious responsibility. But it’s worth it. It’s rewarding in ways that go far beyond what you might expect. And in the case of MACS, you’ll be joining a community of people who never give up on the young people they support.
