A MACS shared tenancy property in Downpatrick, which had fallen into a state of disrepair, has been given a new lease of life thanks to the dedication of Philip Boyd, MACS staff and the incredible support of the local community.

Led by Philip Boyd, SOS Project Manager at Kier Group, the refurbishment project brought together local businesses, volunteers, young people, and even the town’s traffic warden, proving that when a community pulls together, amazing things can be achieved. Over evenings, weekends, and holidays, people donated their time, skills, and energy to complete a £20,000 transformation on a shoestring budget.

The work included:

  • Full repainting throughout the property
  • New carpets and flooring
  • Plastering and repair works
  •  Fresh furnishings to make the space welcoming and comfortable

The result is a safe, modern, and permanent home for young tenants who were previously living in unsuitable conditions.

“This project was about more than providing shelter,” said Philip. “It was about creating a stable, permanent home that can open the door to a brighter future. A new home leads to a new bank account, which leads to a full-time job, and that’s exactly what has happened here in Downpatrick. Absolutely fantastic.”

The project has already made a life-changing difference to one young tenant, who now has a secure home, financial stability, and employment.

Philip added: “Most people say no, but you must keep trying, and remember, that’s ok. The Downpatrick community showed what’s possible when people listen, see the needs around them, and step up to the challenge. Everyone involved, regardless of skill level, played their part. No complaints, no invoices, just commitment.”

MACS staff joined forces with local supporters, with contributions from tradespeople, young adults, and community members who wanted to make a difference. Even the local traffic warden played their part by ensuring vehicles weren’t ticketed during the works, keeping the project moving without additional costs.

“This was an absolute privilege,” said Philip. “Without the support of the Downpatrick community, this simply would not have been possible. The project shows the power of compassion, collaboration, and resilience, and the real change that can be achieved, even with no budget. Keep building those bridges.”

MACS CEO Kate Martin said,

“This project is a shining example of what can be achieved when communities and organisations come together with a shared purpose. It wasn’t just about refurbishing a property, it was about restoring dignity, creating stability, and showing young people that they matter. I want to sincerely thank Philip for his vision, energy and determination in driving this forward, and to the Downpatrick community for stepping up and giving their time, skills and resources. Together, they have transformed a house into a home and created the foundations for a brighter future.”
